Oh Deanie, that is just horrible!

I have been seeing articles the last few days that said the Red Cross has no money left and has had to borrow money to help people.  That may be why they are denying so many people. (I'm not defending the RC worker's actions by the way, I am appalled at the way she responded to you!)

FEMA may be in better shape to help, I don't know.  I hope someone can help, because you do have a very REAL need.  Hang in there, things will get better!

Gosh, I am so sorry to hear how you have been treated. Its a shame that people in times of trouble can be so rude and insensitive to others in a situation like this.
I guess to them a couple feet of water and its not enough to say okay we can help. I guess your roof has to be covered before they will even consider it.
This country is really becoming just like the 3rd world or 4th world countries. They lost their feelings of helping those in need.
I know this is not going to help you in your time of need, but I really feel that you should still try and go to fema or if its possible to other organizations that might be able to help at least with food and clothing.
This could be anyone of us. I know we were also told we don't need flood insurance, and I said to the agent but what if? she said well you can take out the insurance but it will cost you a lot of money, and we couldn't do it. They have you coming and going.
You are in my prayers

Thanks gals - but we are ok, really!  We consider ourselves very fortunate compared to most here.  We had 6 feet in the basement, none in the main level of the house.  Sure, we lost everthing in the family room, weight room, play room, my son's therapy room, a freezer with about $400 in food, our new Christmas tree and decorations, the water heater, water softener, dehumidifier, and many other things.  In the main level, we will have to remove all of the flooring and replace the subflooring that warped and bowed from the moisture downstairs, but - we are at least still able to live in our house safely!!

We will recover, albeit slowly - we will recover!  We are only inconvenienced for a while, not homeless like many here, so we are fine.  Stressed and emotionally drained, but fine!

I'm in awe at how well you are coping with all of this mess!  I was touched by the bag of toys you found on your doorstep; how thoughtful!  I hope things dry up quickly and you aren't subjected to any more rain!

I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers; stay well.

We try to live by our two "grand family rules"...
Rule #1 Don't sweat the small stuff.
Rule #2 Everything is small stuff.

Unless it has killed one of us or will cause one of us to die, it's just not a big, hairy deal!  =)  So... a flood that took about 1/3 of our wordly possessions - NOT a big, hairy deal!!  We survived and we will recover.

Thanks for the prayers though!  We couldn't be so optimistic without them!

Deanie,
Unbelievable that they would treat you that way! Makes me so mad! We hear all of this hype on the TV about how they are helping people and we don't hear anything about all of the people who are turned away. Kind of like, we don't think you have been through enough, here let me kick you some more while you are down!

Then I see on TV that the Red Cross had ran out of money and had to borrow some and they showed jars full of money that people were giving to help the people who suffered loss from the tornadoes and the flooding. I had to wonder will that money actually go to help people or will it go to pay off the loan?

I'm not putting down the people who volunteer to help the Red Cross in these disasters. God Bless them! They don't have any say so in who gets helped and who doesn't and they are there physically helping. That's wonderful. But the bureaucrats who run these agencies well...some day they will answer for their actions.

That really about sums it up......

I have been following this thread and it is very disheartening.

Best to you, your family, your friends and neighbors.

Well, things are improving... we were able to get a great amount of food stamps. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a Disaster Food Stamp program, where income is not even considered.  If you had water damage, you got food stamps.  Sure made losing that entire freezer full of food a whole lot easier!

And - FEMA really came through for us.  We got a grant today!  Just found out.
It's not enough to cover the 40k+ in damages we have, but enough to get us started - and every bit helps!  Luckily, Hubby and I are both pretty capable and knowledgeable when it comes to handy work.  (where's a little smiley with a hammer and a power drill??)

So - thanks for all the prayers everyone!  They've really helped a ton - but we're gonna need a few more when you have time please.

Hope this helps.

FEMA came through ??

Yes, they did!  They've been doing a pretty great job for the whole town overall.  Response times have been great.  FEMA says expect a call from an inspector 3-7 days from application... they've been responding on the average within 12-48 hours!!  And funds have been dispersed in an average of 3-4 days when direct deposited!  I think this is excellent!
